A Look Back – Musical inspired by Elvis remains popular in revivals

The musical Bye Bye Birdie debuted on Broadway on April 14CQ, 1960, and ran for 607 performances, closing on Oct. 7, 1961. Inspired by the 1957 draft notice that put Elvis Presley in the Army in 1958, it depicts a rock star named Conrad Birdie, a play on the name of country music star Conway Twitty, and a publicity stunt after Birdie is drafted.
