When the Gallup organization polled Americans on the most admired figures of the 20th century, Billy Graham, the North Carolina-born evangelist, was ranked No. 8. In a poll of scholars and writers of the century’s most influential Southerners, Graham came in fourth, behind only Martin Luther King Jr., William Faulkner and Elvis Presley.
